He steadies his aim, patiently savoring the wisp of his bow. The moment of hesitation isn’t brought on by his lack of skill, but the desire of death and blood enters his mind.
Either Deulius spent what seemed like an eternity around death and blood. He took great pride in his skills with a bow and his abilities to become one with his environment, The Wilds. The Wilds were apart of him, an extension or an appendage that made his senses keen and his skills an asset. Death is only part of life, and Blood is life. My body will become one with the wild eventually, but not today. He lets loose, penetrating flesh and tearing through bone, his bow sings for him.
The war never settled well with Either, yet it was his duty and he could never let another take the place as commander of the archer infantry. Killing for survival and death did not scare him, but the war itself was not his people’s war. During the war, countless bodies of people laid at his feet. Not just people, his people, his family, the people he spent his whole life protecting from the wild and beyond the wild. Anger built up and a glint of self loathing shook him to his core. After this war, I will protect my people from the outside. No one from the wild will ever die for a “pack” again!
Before his time, the old ones made a “pack” with a human society called the Artorians. This pack called for support in time of need, yet was in exchange for shelter and protection for the old ones of the wild.
Shelter and protection??!!
Either could never imagine this pack to be true. How can the people of the wild ever need shelter and protection, when survival came like second nature to him. Weak, he thought. Weak and helpless is for the prey.
However, the elders of his day were not weak or helpless, and the younger men and women were more resilient and deadlier then all the creatures of the Wild. The weak ones die, the strong ones live. The way of the Wild, Either’s way.
The years of isolation in the wild and his commitment to his people made him the perfect solider, leader, and protector. When Either was a young man he pursued the wild like a predator stalking his prey. It wasn’t brought on by bloodlust or an uncontrollable urge to kill, but it was the only way to survive in the wild. He spent years honing his skills and living under the elder woods. The canopy of trees concealed him from deadly predators of the wild, but Either knew that it was his duty to control these predators. He patrolled the vast borders of the wilds, keeping the outsiders out and the wilds in. Hunt, eat, and sleep. He couldn’t ask for a better life.
Either didn’t bother with politics, or gossip, yet the people of the wild came to him for protection and leadership. His years of hunting, patrolling the wild were told in stories, and the name Either Duelius was feared and revered by his people. He wore clothing only for concealment and took great pride in all creatures that fell at his bow. Either learned how to survive with nothing but his skills, and his bare hands. He respected all that the wild gave him and did not bother to venture outside its borders.
Either’s projection of his body spoke of his skill and respect of the wild. After every kill, he ate and used the body of his prey for every means necessary. Scars, tattoos, and his wild tangled hair made him seem like a vagabond to outsiders, but his people saw him for what he was, The Wilds. This made Either the perfect commander for the archer infantry, and a feared opponent.
Then the war came and went, and he isolated himself more from his people. Not out of fear, but anger. He now spends even more time among the trees and predators of the wild. His name is now a legend, a whisper among people. He is a ghost and a silent protector of the wilds.
Either Duelius’s story is not at an end, but the beginning of the end….
